In their first collaboration, Caribbean American Repertory Theatre teamed with the famed Theatre of the Living Word to present Oliver Stephenson's biting political satire, In the Palace Where He Sits.
Corrupt Caribbean President-for-Life Richard Overhill (Winston Yarde) sits drunk in his lavish palace, enjoying cartoons as his empire crumbles. Machine-gun fire and freedom cries punctuate the tropical night air as his spoiled, adulterous wife (Jennifer Copeland), and his ambitious Aide-de-Camp (Gerald Asbell, Jr.) hatch
plots within plots. Assistants scramble to cope, but not even the butler knows who will serve next.
In the Palace Where He Sits was skillfully directed by Shirley Parkinson Wright. The clever, dialectic script is by long-time Saint Albans resident Oliver Stephenson. Featured players included Miebaka Yohannes, Patrick Tomlinson, Kay I. Neale, and TLW’s new Executive Director Marlon Campbell, who was delighted to collaborate with CART’s Executive Director, Rudolph Shaw to bring this play to life.
Based at the Presbyterian Church of Saint Albans, Theatre of the Living Word began presenting plays to the community in the Spring of 1986. The Pastor of the church, Rev. Dr. Edward Davis, has strongly supported this endeavor to bring the excitement of live performance to local audiences. With an eye to the future, young
people are involved in every aspect of this production, both onstage and behind the scenes.
This project is made possible in part with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Queens Council on the Arts; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; JPMorganChase Arts; and the Nancy Quinn Fund.
